Bigger is not always better and this holds true for air conditioners. The efficiently and energy savings of a unit have nothing to do with the size of the unit. What is important is the it is the right size for your home. A unit too small will have to work harder to cool a larger home and a unit too big is a waste of energy.
What people don’t always realize is that their unit is fine but their house is full of leaks. Cool air escapes through windows, vents, doorways, and through the attic. Ensure that your home is well insulated and that weather stripping has not worn down or been torn away.
Studies have shown that if you adjust your temperature 8-10 degrees from its normal setting can save you up to 10% in energy costs. When your cooling system is set to maintain a particular temperature, it has to constantly work throughout the day to make sure the temperature never rises in the home (or drops in the winter).
There is no overdrive on air conditioners; the unit will work at a regular pace to cool the home to the set temperature. Also, should you forget you dropped the temperature, you’ll end up spending more on energy costs to keep the home cooler.
An air conditioner cleans the air and dehumidifies it. Before air circulates through the vents, it is pulled through an air filter, removing pet hair, allergens and other particles in the atmosphere. Many new thermostats will allow you to program the desired humidity level; this is because when the air is humid (or filled with moisture) it feels warmer. Even if you cannot program your desired humidity level, your air conditioner still acts as a dehumidifier, pulling moisture out of the air as it cycles through the unit and back into the home.
The purpose of a ceiling fan is to circulate air around a room, not to cool it. When the air is moved through the space and comes in contact with our skin, it feels cooler even though the temperature never changes. Think about being outside on a hot Florida day. If you have a spare piece of paper (or theme park map) odds are, you have turned it into a manual fan. As you wave the fan in front of your face, the air feels cool but its still blazing hot outside. Fans in your home do the same thing. If you leave a fan on in an empty room, no one is feeling the “cooler” air and energy to run the fan is being wasted.
